My attempt at turning Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” into a villanelle, per the challenge issued by
We used to know how from what, We used to know where we were going, Till you pulled out the knife to cut The rope that held the doorknob shut To the basement where we were stowing The pain of how, the lies of what. And worse than that, you didn't let The light shine where you were showing The knife you planned to use to cut. No wavering if, no plaintive but, Just the blade suddenly glowing, Cutting through to how from what And now bad blood from heart to gut The years I thought would keep on flowing, Not this knife, this blood, this cut, Not these problems in a rut Where bad blood drowns love's knowing Every inch of how and what, How sharp the knife, how deep the cut.
Your response to that challenge demonstrates your mastery of the craft.
Love this idea. Can you point us to the particular substack post with the challenge please? It wasn't clear to me. Thanks.
