Early This Morning

I.

Early this morning
I woke to the night
Surrendering to the sun

As it does every morning
I woke to the sun’s
Generosity


II.

From the backyard of
My awakening
I saw the past and future

Making friends with the river
I saw the sky spread out
Its enormous arms


III.

My mind climbed the tree
Its dangling limbs
Inviting me to defy

Gravity and common sense
My soul floated down
The canal of dreams


IV.

A car on the road
Flashed a wink at me
As it knowingly passed by

To some strange destination
As the driver looked
To the gentle dawn


V.

And I was left with
This unending song
Filling up my breathing lungs

Carrying me on towards
The one who loves me
And waits patiently
