Busted flat in Walmart
Looking for a filter
Pushing around an empty cart
And feeling out of kilter
Woke up with good intentions
Looked at my to-do list
There was something sitting there
From yesterday that I’d missed
Spent the morning yesterday
Baking a birthday cake
For my sister who’s turning gray
It gave me a feeling I couldn’t shake
She wanted to talk about Taylor Swift
I didn’t really care
Old memories gave me a lift
Above the general despair
The winter’s gone
I’ve got to break this trance
I’ve got to carry on
With home maintenance
So now I’m busted flat in Walmart
Looking for a filter
Pushing around an empty cart
And feeling out of kilter

This is actually a song, not a poem per se. Even though, yes, I’m a poet and the focus of my Substack is poetry, not songwriting or music. Click on the audio link and see how you like it. That’s me singing and strumming the ukulele. The song itself is based on actual events in the life of my lovely wife, not-quite-accurately depicted in the AI illustration that adorns the post.
