It was once said and believed that wars acted as agents of purification. I think the last time this sentiment was felt was the First World War, The Great War.
Fall heralds Winter, which acts as a agent of cleansing the Earth. At least this metaphor holds true in places where there are four seasons and where Winter can be brutal. I remember Montreal winters as having that notable characteristic along with a particular beauty..
That being said, I would rather Nature do the cleansing than humans doing so in wars.
I think a lot about September, kids returning to school, a change of season that I almost don’t get anymore in Southern California - listening to your words tonight I immediately felt it “oh, this is how I feel, I just could never describe it so beautifully!” Thanks for doing the audio, loved your voice as I read.
Love this rondel! The second stanza really moved me as being especially elegant:
Numeric months’ rinse of absinth
Divide with morning marmalade —
September is the month
When sorrows of the summer start to fade.
Thanks, Jason
At a time of transition we’re able to have a tie in the best of both worlds.
Substitute “toe” for “tie”. lol 😆
Thanks, Stan. I was thinking "tie goes to the runner" ... by a toe.
Who am I to argue with the umpire?
Jason is right to use the word ‘elegant’. This is.
Thank you, Patris
Your poem about the changes coming, the season turning...just lovely, Jonathan!
Thank you so much, Sharon
I still carry around that childhood happy feeling of anticipation as school started up again in the fall….
